Double Shot Podium

I decided last minute to do change it up and register for the Double Shot race in Danbury, NC near Hanging Rock State Park. The race consisted of two six mile loops of a newly built mountain bike course and a 13 mile road ride finishing at the top of Hanging Rock State Park. I showed up to the race with tired legs after a week of TRX workouts, riding, and a late night of skiing.  I was happy that I didn't get lost (a regular occurrence) and made it with time to spare! I was pleasantly surprised to see so many woman at the race and a few familiar faces, although teammate Danna Brown was for sure only "badass" woman would register for such an event and my day wouldn't be as leisurely as I anticipated.  I was happy my technical skills showed up for the race, since I was unable to pre-ride the course.  The loop consisted of a variety of burms, rock gardens, and man made bridges that made for a fast and fun ride. A guy I passed said, "this is the hardest mountain bike trail I've ever ridden," which made me chuckle and think he has never ridden in Pisgah or Wilson's Creek.  I was fortunate enough to meet a great gal from VA to ride with, which made the loops go by fast! After the mountain bike course you transitioned to your road bike and rode a VERY hilly 13 mile loop.  I felt equipped to ride hills living in Boone, but was rather surprised by the amount of climbing on the race course, and for those that ride with me know...it's my kryptonite.  There were eight women in the field and my newly made friend started the road course with me; however, after the mountain bike course I knew she was a stronger climber than me and this was becoming a "race".  We played cat and mouse for a few miles and I knew I had to ride like a Jedi (Clemson Chicken Ride Strategy) and focus on my strengths.  So on the flats, downhills, and corners I pushed big gears and focused on putting as much distance between us knowing the last 3k was an uphill climb.  I managed to pass another female rider, slowly picking off competitors.  I had no idea what type of climb the last 3k would be, so I put the worst case scenario in my head...Ceasar's Head or Mt. Jefferson.  I was going to fight to keep my place, but was for sure my competitor would catch me near the finish line.  I was happy that the climb was gradual with only a few steep sections, which enabled me to push a bigger gear.  2k from the top I stood up and felt the cramps in my right quad, so I sat down and focused on my pedal strokes.  Although I never completely lost sight of my competitor, I was the 3rd woman to the finish line in front of her.  I had no real expectations for this race since my training has been limited and my legs were not happy race day, but I thoroughly enjoyed racing and meeting new people!  I did have a few students in the crowd that yelled, "Dr.Weddell" when they saw me, a regular occurrence at mountain bike races, which makes for a fun day!  I miss mountain bike racing, the woods, and the laid back friendly crowd.  Autodrop race promoters and Monroe's Spring's Trails did a great job with the race!  If you are traveling on I77 to VA the trails are about an hour off the interstate and are worth the trip!  With two state parks near, you can certainly make a weekend out of it.
